The most important element to te development of the novel was flashback, which allows the reader to understand how the people in the novel got to the situation they are now. It also helps the reader understand how Mrs. Morel ended up with a man such as Walter Morel.

2. Identify the elements of plot below. Justify your answer.

A. initial incident- The initial incident in Sons and Lovers Morels move to "The Bottoms." This is because Mrs. Morel gained the idea that her life was thus a waste and began her loathing of her husband.

One conflict, which was an external conflict, was between Mr. and Mrs. Morel (p. 53) over whether Mrs. Morel would wait on Mr. Morel. One example of foreshadowing is in Chapter VI where William constantly says "She's very much in love with me now.- But if I died, she'd have forgotten me in three months." This foreshadows William's eventual death at the end of the Chapter and also gives the reader some idea that William knows his fate.
